In a historic conclave that began on May 7, 2025, cardinals gathered to elect the new pope following the death of Pope Francis. After just two days of deliberation and prayer, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been chosen as Vicar of Christ, and has taken the name Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV, aged 69, served previously as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and is well-known for the extensive time he has spent on mission in Peru. He is the first Augustinian Pope, and the first from the United States of America. His election marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church, as he is seen as a pastoral leader capable of bridging gaps between varying perspectives within the faith.
Pope Leo XIV opened his first address from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, with a greeting of peace.
“Peace be with you all! Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd who gave His life for the flock of God. I too would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families, to all people, wherever they are, to all peoples, to all the earth.”
He continued, exhorting the faithful:
“Without fear, united hand in hand with God and among ourselves, let us move forward. We are disciples of Christ. Christ precedes us. The world needs His light. Humanity needs Him as the bridge to be reached by God and His love. Help us too, and then each other to build bridges, with dialogue, with encounter, uniting us all to be one people always in peace.”
The faithful around the world have begun expressing their joy and hope at Leo's election, seeing in him a leader ready to guide the Church through the challenges of contemporary society. The Catholic community eagerly anticipates his papacy, praying for strength and wisdom as he takes on this monumental role.
