Compline (Ad Completorium)

Leaf from a Book of Hours: Vespers or Compline (The Coronation of the Virgin). Date: ca. 1420-30

From ancient times the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the Liturgy of the Hours. In this way the Church fulfills the Lord’s precept to pray without ceasing, at once offering her praise to God the Father and interceding for the salvation of the world.

Compline, coming from the Latin word for “completion”, is the final prayer of the day to be said before going to bed. While clergy and religious are obligated to pray Compline with the other prayers of the Divine Office, it is a laudable and beneficiary practice for lay people to also join in these prayers of the Church.

While these prayers are available in book form, they are also available online. https://www.divinumofficium.com/ has the prayers in the older rite and https://www.ibreviary.com/m2/breviario.php has the prayers in the newer rite.

We have also included Compline for Saturday and Sunday below.
